Cold War

Soviet Union-Communist nations

United States-Democratic nations.
---Their difference in government created conflict between the two nations

  • Communism= A classless society where people within the nation don’t have a say in the government (Soviet Union)

  • Democracy= Government in favor of the people (US)

  • Both nations thought that they personally had the right form of government to follow.

  • The United States wanted to form world trade, to increase export and import sales between all nations. This would create a friendly relationship between each nation and the economy would become stronger and better around the world. But, the Soviet Union didn't agree with that, they wanted to isolate their nation.
  • ----

  • Isolationism- Is when a nation decides to cut themselves off from other influences

A few reasons why the Soviet Union would rather not trade with other nations:
  • -The personal economy in their nation would improve because the money would circulate within their nation; people only bought goods made and sold within their nation.
  • -They didn’t have to be effected by western influence.
  • -The government could have more control over their people.
  • -They wouldn’t have to communicate with other nations.

Therefore the U.S and Soviet Union couldn't really compromise or come to any kind of agreement with each other because of how entirely different their mindsets were.

After the Second World War the two nations with the most power were:
  • -The United States
  • -The Soviet Union

This led to further problems between the two nations because they both wanted to dominate each other and have the most power.

  • Didn’t have a major problem with the Communists
  • -Died before the Cold War started

President Truman
  • -He came into power after the death of President Roosevelt
  • -He was a major cause of the Cold War
  • -He strongly disagreed and disliked CommunistsHarryTruman.jpg
  • -He didn’t want Communism to spread
  • -He didn’t have the same views and desire for neutrality as President Roosevelt did
  • -Passed the Truman Doctrine which was anti-communist

Within just a few years the relationship between the Soviet Union and U.S went from bad to far worse.

Marshall planmarshall_plan_poster.JPG
  • -The United States tried to help out after World War ll.
  • -After World War two the U.S wanted to help build up the global economy by sending out aids to different nations.
  • *The Soviet Union did not want it. They rejected the U.S's help because the government didn't want to subject themselves to western influence which could weaken the totalitarian government
  • -The Soviet Union thought that the U.S was interfering

  • When the Cold War began the relations between the West and the East became interrupted and had problems.

1953-54

  • -The problems between the Soviet Union and the United States began to subside.
  • -Both nations had created very powerful weapons that would completely destroy each other if they were to be used.
  • -The U.S and Soviet Union got along better at the end of the Cold War.
  • - After the death of Stalin the Soviet Union had a loose form of government and allowed their people to have more say in their nation.
